If there’s one area of knowledge that all internet marketers should study up on, it’s search engine optimization. SEO is the most important tool that Internet marketers have in their tool box; when used the right way and applied effectively, SEO can be responsible for sending huge surges of free, organic traffic your way. Since the traffic you get this way is based on your chosen keywords, it can’t get any more targeted than this. Yet it’s very common to see marketers, especially newbies, make mistakes when they try their hands at SEO. The best way to avoid mistakes is to know about them, so read over the following three SEO pitfalls and watch out for them. One tricky factor when it comes to optimizing your site are outbound links, as the right kind are helpful, but the wrong kind can lower your site’s ranking. The only kind of outbound links you should consider having on your website are highly relevant ones. In general, minimize the use of outbound links on your site. Outbound links should also be formatted using anchor text with keywords relevant to your site. If you want to maintain, or increase your page rank and search engine rank, don’t have a resources page with a large number of outbound links.
Your anchor text, then, should be the targeted keyword you want to rank for, whether it’s “housebreaking a puppy” or “article marketing tips.” If your anchor text says something like, “for more information,” however, you’re making the mistake of not giving the search engines any meaningful keywords. Stay away from automated content on your blog or website, as this won’t help your ranking or give your site an original, high quality look. There are lots of programs and WordPress plug-ins that use various methods to automatically generate relevant (supposedly) content for your site. This tactic will not enable you to reach the top of the search engines, and it certainly won’t give your site a quality or authority site appearance. The only way to get real results for your site is to make it truly useful and appealing to people, and that means having original, helpful content. Having code on your website that’s not well optimized is an SEO mistake. The search engines will have difficulty with any code that’s awkward or complicated, and this won’t help them rank your site well. Try to stick to programming your site by hand rather than using an HTML editor, as these tend to place excessive code on your site. If you’re not a programmer, make sure you hire one to ensure that your website is clean internally.
In general, SEO itself has been practiced for quite a few years. However, it has gone more difficult these days, given that you are competing with millions of other sites that are trying to do exactly what you’re aiming for. If you want to be competitive and rank your site well, it helps if you steer clear of the SEO mistakes we’ve gone over here. Once you get your website on the front page of Google and other major search engines for your targeted keyword then your job becomes a lot more easier, because all you need to do is maintain your ranking.
