Host our own site

Anyone can create a revenue-generating website with time, energy, and the few dollars a month it takes to host it. And, like creating a brick-and-mortar business, creating a website can be as much about expressing personal development and providing the world with a service as it is about earning a living. The Internet offers opportunities for anyone motivated enough to start a business of their own or try something different, and the opportunities are almost endless. Have you ever dreamed of running your own web site, your own piece of the dot com pie? It all starts with a great idea, but to get a successful website up and running it needs a little effort.

It shows that you are up-to-date and you care about your customers by offering them a convenient way to contact you and to learn about your products and services. Using the Internet to search for services and products is much easier and faster than searching by hand through the Yellow Pages. So, to do business online you must have a website. Why? There are many answers to this question. Some of the most important reasons to establish an Internet presence are: 1. Increased credibility. It’s a proven fact that a professional, well-designed site has a good impact on the customer’s confidence in your company.

2. With a website, you open yourself up to a world of opportunity in reaching people who might not otherwise find you. When your offices are closed you can be sure that your website is open to showcase your products and services and answer your customer’s questions. A 24/7 International presence. Your website is available for your potential customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

3. A powerful sales tool. Your customers will be able to reach your services and products in their own time. You can save money on printing costs for brochures, coupons, flyers, newsletters, and other mailings. Of course, a website doesn’t exclude the traditional forms of marketing, but rather complements them. But if you are here, chances are that you already have a website or considering having one, so let’s proceed to the next step: hosting a website.

A website is basically a set of files linked among them through a navigation system. More complex sites will have buttons, forms and extended functionality with a database to store emails, requests, products characteristics, etc. but in the end they come down to the same thing: a collection of files. So, hosting a website is the process of making those files available to the Internet users. To make the website available to the Internet users you need: A computer connected to the Internet where the files will be stored; A software called web server (for example Apache Web Server) that will serve the files to the visitors; A way to make the visitors find your site.

Be careful with contributed modules and templates because some of them will require additional steps to update them from Drupal 6 to 7.

1. The first this that you should do is to backup all of your files in the installation directory. Pay careful attention that you have a backup copy from the “sites” folder because in that folder are stored all of the configuration files, custom themes, and contributed modules. Maybe you can make one copy from the whole site and one copy just from “sites” folder.

2. The next thing that you should do is to backup your database. If you are using MySQL you can backup all of the data trough phpmyadmin or by SSH. There is “Backup and Migrate Module” module that can help you backup your data.

3. Before starting with the upgrade process be sure to put your site in maintenance mode. Go to “Site Maintenance” and change the state of your site to maintenance mode. When you put the site in maintenance mode no one can access the site but the site’s administrator.

4. After you are done with step 4, disable any old contributed templates and modules because they may interfere with the update process. When all of the modules and themes are disabled the default theme for your site should be Garland. After that, remove all of the files of contributed modules and templates from Drupal’s directory.

Download and unpack Drupal 7 to your site’s root directory. Copy the files from the old “sites” folder to the new folder that is located in your root directory, and pay special attention that you have copied settings.php. Open settings.php and check that the information is correct. There is no need to copy the old templates to the new site.

6. The update process will start when you visit http://www.yoursite.com/update.php. After the page have been loaded, you will see a warning message to backup your files and database. Click continue and and in the next page you will see the updates that will be made during the update process. Select apply and the upgrade process will start. Be sure not to interrupt the upgrade process or refresh the page while the installation is in progress. After the installation have completed you will be presented a log message displaying all of the changes that have been made with this upgrade.
